2024 Home Tour (aka The Capilano House)
Happy 2024! It’s been a while since I’ve posted an update on the house so I thought I’d start the year off by doing just that.
We purchased our home back in 2021 and in short, it needed some love. I actually remember our real estate agent calling this house a ‘train wreck’, but all I saw was potential. We’ve certainly come a long way, but as I’m putting this post together I’m also realizing there’s still a long road ahead. It’s a good thing though. The ultimate goal back in 2021 was to get the house to a blank slate so that it’s easier to envision the possibilities and putting this post together has made me realize how much opportunity we still have in front of us.
Below is a comparison of what the house looked like back in July 2021 and how it looks today. And since I love making do-to lists, I’ve also included one for each space that I feel isn’t quite finished yet. In a few years it will be fun to look back and see how much more we’ve completed :)
Main Living Area
July 2021
January 2024
To Do List:
Finish the front entry. I’d like to find a cabinet with closed storage for our shoes and outdoor gear (right now I’m leaning towards this one), a new bowl for our keys (I LOVE this one), a rug, and a full height mirror (something like this one) for the little alcove to the left of the entry door.
Replace the hinges on the entry door with brushed nickel hinges to match the new handle I installed last fall.
I’d like to find a way to hide curtain track in living room, this DIY looks like a good option.
Find art for over the couch. I think this piece would be perfect.
Remove valance above the sink and run backsplash tile to the ceiling.
Install built in hood fan using the old valance material so that blends seamlessly with the existing cabinetry.
Replace kitchen faucet & cabinet handles. Still deciding on whether I want to go with a brushed pewter to tie into the dining room light or aged gold brass to match the pendants over the island.
Not pictured, but there is a cabinet door in the island that I need to re-install.
Also not pictured, but the interiors of the two closets in the hallway aren’t quite fully finished.
Replace door bell cover. Ours currently looks like this, but has yellowed with age.
Finish back entry. We are planning on running the wood floors all the way down the stairs and I’d like to replace the current shelving/coat hooks with something like this. We also need to install a railing and right now I’m leaning towards something like this or this. I’d also love to find a way to hide the wall sconce cover above the back door and random electrical panel to the left of the door (not pictured).
Primary Bedroom
July 2021
January 2024
To Do List:
Find art for over the bed.
Replace rug. The current one isn’t aging well and is slightly too small.
Replace window behind bed. I’ve always wanted something oversized in this room.
Finish walk-in closet. Here is the current inspiration.
Finish ensuite. Last February I started putting some ideas together…
Secondary Bedroom (now Theo’s Room)
July 2021
January 2024
There’s actually nothing left to do here, but it will obviously evolve as Theo gets older.
Main Bath
July 2021
January 2024
To Do:
Recently I’ve been looking into lime washing the walls to elevate the space. Depending on how that looks, I might explore changing out the hardware & lights to a different metal.
Cut down the bolts on the toilet so they can be properly capped.
Not pictured: Fix tub spout so that it covers the entire hole in the shower wall.
Basement Living Room & Guest Room
July 2021
January 2024
To Do List:
Find throw pillows for the sectional.
Replace current workspace with a built in desk & floating shelves. I’ve always pictured something like this or this.
Finish guest room. We need a new bed frame, end tables, and a larger cabinet to store extra bedding. We’re still a ways away from furnishing this room, but I love the vibe of this space.
With the guest room being pretty plain, a hanging pendent light might be a good way to elevate this room as well.
Gym
July 2021
January 2024
We wrapped this space up last fall when we got the mirrors installed. Nothing further to do here :)
Bathroom & Laundry
July 2021
January 2024
Ok, in all honesty I hate these two rooms. The bathroom might not be so bad if we install some new floors but I feel like the laundry room has only gotten worse (the new electrical panel at the bottom of the stairs isn’t helping the whole situation). Eventually we’ll overhaul both of these rooms but since we’re a few years a way from that, below is the list of more immediate items to finish off.
To Do List:
Install new floor in bathroom.
Install baseboards & window trims in bathroom & laundry room.
Finish painting ceiling in laundry room.
Replace laundry room light.
