Capilano House: 6 Month Progress Update
Well this post has been a loooong time coming, but I decided to take a friends advice and stop waiting for the house to be perfect before revealing it. So today I’m finally sharing an update on the renovation.
For those of you who are new here, my husband and I purchased our first home back in July.
While it was super cute on the outside, this 1950’s bungalow was in much need of some love.
So despite never owning a home or renovating before, we jumped in with both feet and fully embraced the renovation life with our lofty list of changes in hand:
Combine two bedrooms into a larger primary bedroom with a walk in closet and an ensuite.
Add a larger closet in the hallway.
Gutting and updating the main bath.
Changing out the 60 year old furnace (I’m not kidding on it being 60 years old) for an electric heat pump so we could cap the gas line to the house.
Re-routing a lot of electrical (to accommodate the heat pump and cutting the gas line).
Install a new hot water heater.
Installing engineered hardwood throughout the entire main floor.
Replace all the light fixtures, doors, baseboards, and trims on the main floor.
Re-painting the entire main floor (including the ceilings).
Building a TV wall in the living room.
Combing the basement bedroom and den into one large room for a home gym.
Needless to say, from possession day until move in day roughly 3 1/2 months later, our lives totally revolved around this renovation. It was exhausting, frustrating, and some days absolutely defeating, but at the same time, oddly satisfying.
So here we are at 6 months in. I wish I could say we were finished, but the first thing I learned during this renovation is that literally everything takes longer then you think it should, so I guess I shouldn’t be surprised at how much work we still have to do. But I also have to admit that I’m incredibly proud of how far it’s come.
Dining Room
Outstanding Items:
Maybe a new curtain rod, but otherwise this room is done!
Kitchen
Outstanding Items:
Replace the backsplash and cabinet hardware.
Remove the wooden valence over the sink.
Replace the hood fan.
Add two counter stools. Right now I’m leaning towards these ones.
I’m so torn on this, but I’ve been mulling over the idea of painting the cabinets. Would love to hear your thoughts on this in the comments below!
Living Room
Outstanding Items:
Find a rug. Right now I’m liking what EQ3 has but I’m still undecided.
Buy (or build) a coffee table. Something like this one would be perfect.
Buy a TV that fits the ‘hole’. This is with Matt as I know nothing about TV’s.
Replace patio door with a tri-fold door. We’re dreaming of something like this.
Primary Bedroom
Outstanding Items:
Finish installing/painting baseboards & trims.
Find a rug for under the bed.
Replace the flush mount light fixture over our bed with a pendent.
I was inspired by this photo so I want to find an oversized full height mirror for the wall across from the bed.
Replace the window on the wall to the right of the bed with a larger one so that it’s centered on the wall.
Guest Room
Outstanding Items:
Build a new headboard with built in night stands similar to this.
Add wall sconces on either side of the bed.
I’m not sure on this yet, but I feel like this room needs an accent chair in the corner opposite the bed.
Definitely still a ways to go on this, but I’ll be sure to keep you all posted as we continue progressing. Next on our list is finishing our main bath, stay tuned for updates!
